Scam artist target senior citizens
Sheriff Jim Hammond recently discussed with the media a scam that was committed against an elderly citizen. Unfortunately she lost a significant amount of money that she will not recover. Crimes such as these are perpetrated against our elderly because they can become confused and are easily intimidated. A senior citizen can become a victim of financial fraud through many schemes, including solicitations through the telephone, mail, illegitimate businesses, and even family members and caretakers.
In the last few days several residents of Hamilton County have received a phone call from a male soliciting information/money and stating that the recipient will receive a large sum of money. First, to win they must wire a sum of money or give financial information over the phone. Remember; never give financial information out to anyone. Scam artist can use your personal information to commit fraud, such as identity theft which is the fastest grown white collar in America. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
When you suspect financial exploitation, report it to your bank’s security and notify law enforcement as soon as possible.
